FISHING SAYULITA
Riviera Nayarit FISHINGPuerto Vallarta Fishing Report: Oct 2009.
Captain Juan Pablo Moll - PVNN
What more can I say - the fishing is great. It’s the typical Puerto Vallarta summer, a lot of tuna, a lot of marlin, a lot of most species, and most importantly a lot of action. We have been successful day in and day out for about the past month. The weather has been ideal and the water is clean and warm once you get out of the bay (88 – 90 degrees). Its definitely the right time to be in Puerto Vallarta.

The tuna season just started here in Puerto Vallarta and there’s already a lot of tuna at Corbetena and El Banco. Unfortunately they are not biting at Corbetena but I expect this to change within the next few weeks, they are currently feeding on small squid, but we’ve getting 2 – 3 strikes per day at El Banco, all between 60-150 pounds. We have the most success using the kite with live caballito (google eye fish), and poppers are also working well.

The Puerto Vallarta Yachting and Fishing Charter Association features virtual tours that allow you to see exactly what you are getting before you charter a Puerto Vallarta fishing or charter boat.

We’ve also had 3-4 marlin strikes per day. I’ve found a lot of black and blue marlin at Corbetena, and if they’re not there, they’re usually just 2 –10 miles west. Most of the blue marlin are weighing between 200 – 300 pounds, but we’ve also released a few black marlin that are getting up to about 500 pounds. We’ve also been getting a few marlin strikes at El Banco but there are definitely more skipjack at Corbetena, and that’s what the marlin are eating. We’ve also had some luck trolling lures.
There are also a lot of pargo (snapper) at Corbetena. We’ve had a lot of luck just drifting over the high spots with both live and dead skipjack. We’re usually getting 2-3 per day in very little time, most weighing between 20 – 60 pounds.
There has also been some really good inshore fishing. Although this time of year 99% of my efforts are offshore they few times we’ve stopped at the point (Punta Mita) on the way in we’ve had a lot of fun. There’s a lot of rooster fish, amberjack, and small pargo.
To sum things up, the fishing is great. There is a lot of bait in the water, the water is warm and clear, and all the other elements needed for a perfect summer are present. There are a lot of fish at all the spots, even within the bay, and things are just getting started. If your planning to fish Puerto Vallarta, this is definitely an exciting time of year.
Good luck, good fishing, and I hope to see you in Vallarta soon.Captain Juan Pablo Moll

SAYULITA FISHING RESOURCES
The pre-Columbian indigenous inhabitants of the area were most likely small bands of the semi-nomadic Cuyuteco. In 1530, Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán's account of his battle with the Cuyutecos at Valle gave name to the Bay of Banderas, as the natives carried colorful banners. Given the lack of interest in Occidental Mexican archaeology, only a small number of substantial civic sites have been identified in the region, namely at Ixtapa, Valle, and Ixtlan del Rio. These sites were most likely tributary outposts of the Aztatlan kingdom centered in northern present-day SAYULITA. Like most of the greater Banderas Bay area, the sheer remoteness and thick jungle prevented permanent European colonization until the late 1800s. The ejido of Sayulita was not established until 1941 when the first families arrived from the mountains of Jalisco.

Main Beach in front of Don Pedro's
Known for its consistent river mouth surf break, roving surfers "discovered" Sayulita in the late 60's with the construction of Mexican Highway 200. Today, Sayulita is a prosperous growing village of approximately 4,000 residents. Hailed as a popular off-the-beaten-path travel destination, Sayulita offers a variety of activities such as horseback riding, hiking, jungle canopy tours, snorkeling and fishing. Still a mecca for beginner surfers of all ages, the quaint town attracts upscale tourists with its numerous art galleries and restaurants as well. The most well-established restaurant, Don Pedro's (since 1994), has attracted an international clientele for years, many of whom have vacation villas in the picturesque village.
Sayulita has a curious eclectic quality, frequented by native Cora and Huichol peoples, travelling craftsmen as well as international tourists. Sayulita is the crown jewel in the newly designated "Riviera SAYULITA", the coastal corridor from Litibu to San Blas. Its stunning natural beauty and easy access to Puerto Vallarta have made Sayulita real estate some of the most sought after in all of Mexico. With a growing ecological awareness and stricter zoning enforcement, development is being regulated to help safeguard the environment and quality of life of the community and surrounding area.
